People in the public view: actors, musicians, talented professionals and other famous people must address professional considerations differently to engage professional management effectively so that brand is managed to protect the most valuable asset from the challenges that can occur with a constant public life. Utilizing several years in strategic consulting and management assisting businesses, entrepreneurs and professionals, Lita Williams offers the following professional considerations:
How do famous people manage the hazards of public life?
Famous people employ professional assistance to manage the hazards of public life. Yet, it floors me both professionally and personally to hear of support systems that fail famous people in the most basic way.
In the news, in print and throughout public venues are communications where the famous are trafficked for public consumption. The ongoing flux of communication and interest in the select few has provided steady employment for personal assistants, talent managers and professional supporters. Even so, sad stories are abundant depicting the famous struggling with brand image and the ability to enjoy every day living.
I recall hearing about emotional turbulence that plagued Phyllis Hyman, Britney Spears and Michael Jackson. As a fan and professional, communication regarding their pain has weighed heavy on my mind. It is apparent that professional considerations were inadequate to ensure that their brand would be managed properly and that support systems were not installed properly to provide help for their personal needs as well as professional struggles.
What should famous people consider when seeking professional support? Due diligence and referral options can establish the who; but what is more important? Before professional support is ever employed, famous people, and anyone else seeking professional guidance, need to self assess to establish parameters for professional engagement.
A true professional will consult to understand and determine appropriate response prior to engaging prospective clients in a professional manner. Once needs, professional requirements and overall goals are established then support systems can be considered for installation and all actions thereafter must align with the goals established to support the client both personally and professionally. If consistent care for the personal welfare and professional goals of the client aren't obviously evident in all activity that aligns the client then there are disconnects in support systems and activities should be reassessed for better alignment or removed all together so that long-term damage doesn't occur.
